Monument 4
Physical charestics
This is the fourth of the five as yet
located monuments. It is situated on the top of Mt Ephriam. It is
seven feet tall, five feet
wide at the base.
This Monument is in full view from many locations
and is well known in the town. Pictures dating back fifty
years show a continual changing profile.
This picture is not very bright but was taken about two
years ago. As this is the most obvious of the monuments it
seems to be constantly being rebuilt. Local legend has it
that when the national geological survey people wanted to
put their large "white cross" for the "arial survey" of this
area they dismantled the monument because it was in the way.
It was only on the insistance of local people that they came
back and rebuilt it.
This picture was taken Nov 21 1996 and looks north to Mt
Ascutney along the line of monumnets. The main "Ley energy" line
is about 45 feet to the east of it. Local legend says that
originaly there were two monumnets at this location. There
appears to be an area where a few base stones still exist that
is on the line of energy. The *Main* line of energy flows 45
feet east, continuing east five more lines were noted that
were parelled to the center line, each one of
decreasing strength (three lines were noted to the west
but were not followed far enough to see if there were two more).
This picture is looking south in the direction of
Putney Mt. On the extreme left you can see the remains of
what might of been another Monument (if this were the case
it would point to the location of other stone stacks on
the adjecent hill -- also that monument would be on the
center "ley energy line").
This picture is looking west to Fox Chair Mt. and Bond Hill. A Triangle
of very old Oaks and a standing stone is located on Fox Chair Mt. And yes there
is a stone formation called the Fox Chair and when sitting in it you are
looking directly back at Monument #4.
This is the geological map for the area around Monument 4. The area south of
this monument is off the map so area from here to Monument 5 cannot be determined
at this time. When this area becomes mapped it will be added. Note the
continuation of the same formantions that are around Monument 1 and 3.
This picture is taken from about 1000 feet above the summit of Mt Ephriam.
The distinct lines are well worn paths that may of resulted from extensive
sheep farming for two hundreds of years past. The top has only started to
regrow within the last fifteen years from the damage the sheep had inflicted.
