Universal Public Service Notice

NOTICE: To All Customers of Vermont Telephone Company, Inc.

On May 23, 2013, the Vermont Public Service Board designated Vermont Telephone Company, Inc. (VTel) the "Eligible Telecommunications Carrier" for its service area for universal service purposes. The goal of universal service is to provide all citizens access to essential telecommunications services.

VTel provides voice grade access to the public switched network single party residential and business services for rates beginning at $17.75 per month for residential customers and $23.25 per month for business customers. This includes a minimum of 30 minutes local usage as well as access to emergency services and toll blocking.

Use of these services may result in added charges. VTel would be pleased to provide you with specific rates for your area upon request.

VTel also offers qualified customers Lifeline Service. If you are a low income customer, you may qualify for the VTel Lifeline Program. This means you may receive a monthly discount for your basic phone charges. This service also includes a discount for line connection charges and free toll blocking for qualifying customers.

Setup Windows Live Mail

  1. Open Windows Live Mail

  2. From the file menu at the top of the screen choose Options and then Email accounts...

  3. Click the Add button from the menu on the right

  4. On the next screen choose Email Account

  5. On the Add your email accounts screen enter your information as follows; however replace the following values:
    • Email Address: Enter your @vermontel.net email address
    • Password: Enter the password for your email account
    • Display name for your sent messages: Enter your first and last name
    • Be sure to check the boxes for remember this password and manually configure server settings

  6. On the Configure server settings screen enter your information as follows
    • Server Type: POP
    • Incoming Server address: pop.vermontel.net
    • Authenticate using: Clear text
    • Outgoing Server address: smtp.vermontel.net
    • Be sure to leave all checkboxes on this screen unchecked

  7. Click Finish

Configure Apple Mail

  1. If this is the first time you've run Apple Mail, you will be presented with a simple dialog that will allow you to enter all of your details:
    • Email Address: Enter your email address with the @vermontel.net at the end.
    • Incoming Mail Server: Enter pop.vermontel.net
    • Mail Server Type: Select POP.
    • User Account ID: Enter your email address -- this time leave off the @vermontel.net.
    • Password: Enter the password for your email account.
    • Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server: Enter smtp.vermontel.net

  2. If you already have an account configured in Mail.app adding your VTel email account is a slightly more involved process, but still a simple one. Open the Preferences for Mail.app by going to the Mail menu and selecting Preferences. The dialog below will open with a list of all the accounts currently configured in Mail.app. Click on Create Account.

  3. There is where you tell Mail.app which servers handle your email.
    • Description: Anything you like, such as VTel Mail.
    • Email Address: Enter your email address with the @vermontel.net at the end.
    • Full Name: Enter your real name or a nick name.
    • Host Name: Enter pop.vermontel.net
    • User Name: Enter your email address -- this time leave off the @vermontel.net.
    • Password: Enter the password for your email account.
    • SMTP Host: Enter smtp.vermontel.net
    • SMTP User: Enter your email address -- this time leave off the @vermontel.net.
    • SMTP Password: Enter the password for your email account.

  4. Click on the Account Options tab. This is where you tell Mail.app how and when to check your email and what to do with the mail it receives. Set the options the same as the picture below.

Setup Outlook

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook.
  2. Go to the Tools menu and choose E-mail Accounts.

  3. On the E-mail Accounts wizard window select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.

  4. Select the POP3 option for your server type and click Next.

  5. On the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) window enter your information as follows; however replace the following values:
    • Your Name: Enter your first and last name.
    • E-mail Address: Enter your @vermontel.net email address.
    • User Name: Enter your email address; however leave off the @vermontel.net.
    • Password: Enter the password for your email account.
    • Incoming mail server (POP3): Enter pop.vermontel.net
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): Enter smtp.vermontel.net
      On the Internet E-mail Settings (POP3) window enter your information.
  6. Click the More Settings... button and go to the Outgoing Server tab. Make sure the option My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked and that there is a dot next to the option Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK when finished.

  7. Click Next
    Internet Email Settings.
  8. Click Finish.

Setup Outlook Express

  1. Start Outlook Express (if the Internet Connection Wizard starts up automatically, skip ahead to Step 4).
  2. Expand the Tools menu and choose Accounts.
  3. Click Add, and then click Mail to open the Internet Connection Wizard.

  4. On the Your Name page of the wizard type your name as you want it to appear, to the people you send email to, and then click Next. Most people use their full name, but you can use any name, such as a nickname, that people will recognize.
  5. On the Internet Email Address page type your email address. This should be in the format of @vermontel.net. Click Next.
  6. On the Email Server Names page, fill in the information as shown in the image below:

  7. Click Finish.
  8. Click on the pop.vermontel.net account and then click the Properties button on the right side of the window.

  9. Click on the Servers tab and make sure the option My server requires authentication is checked. Click the OK button when finished.

  10. Click the Close button.
